Gertrud D is a Rotterdam born, Amsterdam based artist who makes strong and evocative abstract art. She trained as an actress, worked in theatre also as a set- and costume designer and started to paint in the early 1990s. Inspired by the Blaue Reiter group of Macke and Kandinsky, and spurred on by the American abstract expressionist Sam Francis, she soon realised she had found her true vocation in putting paint to paper (on canvas).
Since then she has developed into a prolific artist with an impressive and ever expanding oeuvre of colourful, vibrant works of abstract art, with a very recognisable signature style. Her work has found its way to many homes and public spaces and is an inspiration to young and old.
Gertrud D turned 80 in the spring of 2023 and, as lively and strong as her paintings, has no plans of slowing down. She can still be found in her marvelous studio every single day, working an re-working paintings on the top floor of the impressive Indië warehouse in the centre of Amsterdam.
Her own gallery on the ground floor of the warehouse is open to visitors every Friday and Saturday. The thick layering of her paint and the amazing sheens she creates mixing paints and minerals can never be fully captured on a photograph – so if you can, please come and see them up close and be mesmerized by the life force of Gertrud D!
The work of Gertrud D has been shown in several musea including Museum Jan in Amstelveen, het Palau Can Gomis in Barcelona and the Danubiana Art Museum in Bratislava. Most recent was a major solo exhibition in the summer of 2024 at NDSM Fuse in Amsterdam, presenting new work from 2020 – 2024.
She has participated in different art fairs, including KunstRai Amsterdam, Art Monaco, ARCO Madrid and PAN Amsterdam.
